How the Other X% Lives (an Honest Retrospective):
It's Wednesday and I am doing a Morning ride during the work week.
It is not that I haven't ridden before during the work week but today offers something different I am riding with Doug who has off every Wednesday and does a morning ride to Nyack with a Stop at the Runcible Spoon ("The stop" for cyclist riding from NYC and other points South and West) It is in conversations with these riders (or more accurately the overhearing of conversations) That I get a glimpse into what appears to be a more balanced lifestyle that some of these riders have.
Starting there day with a 40-50 mile ride on a January day with 50 degree + weather (A gift from the cycling gods) 2 women closing in on 50 that appear more fit than the average 30 year old. "The Doc" Riding on a Moots Cross bike with Rear Suspension. Another rider that modestly boasts that he has logged almost 14k miles in 2006.
I wish I had this "lifestyle" Then I look at my week off - in review Monday I did not ride Tuesday is a late night session inside on the trainer. Wednesday is this ride.
Thursday I tool around on my hardtail practicing wheelies and tabletop jumps at a local park.
Friday 12:00 I am typing this at Starbucks and have not ridden...yet! (I Ride on the inside on the Trainer Later that day)
It seems that maybe the balance that I am looking for is more discipline and time management. I used to get up at 5:30 to get in an hour and a 1/2 before work 3 times a week now that only happens every once in a while.
There was the lunch hour ride that I would get in a few times a week as well and a quick 45 recovery spin at the gym at work (Lots of opportunities that seem to be capitalized on less frequently these days)
Usually I complete my vacation with a feeling of I what I am missing out on.
I finish this Vacation with the a sense of what I am not taking advantage of.
The basic truth (at least for me) is that there are always opportunities to do the things we love it is just a matter of priority, motivation and seizing those moments.
Carpe Diem - and Ride
